Babies learn a new language by their mother while they are in the womb

Did you know that babies begin learning in the womb? Before he/she is even born, your baby has already been exposed to many opportunities for language learning while in utero. Previously, it was believed that the newborn begins to differentiate between language sounds within their first months of life. But according to a new study, brain mechanisms for hearing are developed at 24-26 weeks of gestational age, unborn babies recognize their mother’s talk at the last trimester of pregnancy. They can also demonstrate the words that they have heard at birth.

Because the mother’s voice is magnified and amplified by her body, the sound can be heard by her baby, along with other sounds. So many speech patterns and rhythms are formed in the womb, babies start learning their primary language by observing those. Further, many researchers believe that you can ease your child’s language development, from your womb itself. We at womb talk can help you to understand this process through our sessions.

Teaching sound recognition

You can even teach your baby before birth. Any stimulations from a mother can affect the fetus directly, as the fetus is so sensitive to the sound waves. When the baby is introduced repeatedly to a sound, her memory stimulates the recognition of that sound. The brainwave patterns which are formed help the fetus to identify the sound.

Can babies differentiate between different voices?

A fetus begins responding to sound at between 22 and 24 weeks. It can only hear low frequencies. As the hearing system and the brain continue to develop, this range increases. By late pregnancy, the fetus not only learns repeated sounds in the womb but can also recognize words and their variations.

Are loud noises bad for the fetus?

Sound travels through the body, that is why it is recommended that pregnant women should avoid very loud situations. Continue exposure to loud noises may contribute to hearing loss in the baby. Loud noises which include, loud music, crowds, siren, airplanes, machinery, guns, and so on, need to be kept far away from mother.

Can the fetus hear music?

A fetus will only here low-pitched sounds in the first few weeks. Between 29-33 weeks baby starts to make out high-pitched sounds too. You may be able to tell if your baby can hear music sounds outside your womb by playing music, he may respond by moving around more. The study says exposing a fetus to both speech and music will help the baby grow with special talents.
